Melchor Guarte followed up on the footsteps of elder brother Mervin as he topped the 10-kilometer run of the Stags Charity Run at the ASEANA City near the SM Mall of Asia and Macapagal Blvd. in Pasay City on Jan. 12.
And Guarte, 17, blazed his way to a dominating performance as he clocked 36 minutes and 48 seconds, way ahead of closest pursuers Zandrex Yumol and Jerome Udton, who checked in at 51.02 and 59.07 to wind up second and third places, respectively.
Guarte thus took over from elder sibling Mervin, who reigned supreme in the first three editions of this annual event that was done to generate funds for San Sebastian College's apostolic and charity missions in the provinces.
"I have prepared hard for this event and want to win this just like my brother (Mervin)," said Guarte, a third year high school student of San Sebastian who hails from Oriental Mindoro, in Filipino.
Mae Ann Sarmiento reigned supreme in the women's side after she clocked 55.53 to successfully defend the title she won a year ago.
She bested Sam Tanada and Loreine Reyes , who timed in 56.54 and 57.02 for second and third spots.
Other category winners were Loreine Santos, Samantha Smith and Rostint Fulgencio and Vincent Nabong, Ronald Dante and Jonathan Bartola in the 5-km run and Ronald Carana, Alex Shano and Jimbo Tolcibas and Shiela Lantana and Betina Lanotoso in the 3-km race.
About 4,000 runners participated in the annual race, including San Sebastian president-rector Rev. Fr. Christopher Maspara, OAR, and overall organizing committee chairman Rev. Fr. Joel Alve, OAR and other member of the school's religious committee.
"It's been another successful year and we thank everyone who supported our cause," said Maspara, who awarded the prizes and trophies to the winners along with Alve.
The annual Stags Run is one of the highlights of SSC-R Manila s 73rd Foundation Celebration which is set to unfold on January 12-20, 2014. The anniversary celebration banners the theme "Greatness Awaits One Who Recollects."
