THE prestigious Timex Run will have its own edition in Davao City on August 26 in an out-and-back course at Roxas Avenue (near Ateneo de Davao University), according to a report posted in the Davao SCOOP Chapter Facebook page.
Based on the report written by Davao-based sports journalist Lito delos Reyes, the event was formally launched last Monday at the Grand Regal Hotel by local race coordinator Kenneth Sai of Vantage Sports Promotions.
Also present was the family of actress Maricel Laxa and husband-TV host Anthony Pangilinan, who arrived with their five children.
The categories are the 5K, 10K and 16K with brand new Timex wristwatches and cash prizes at stake to the top three finishers. The registration fees are P400 for 5K, P500 for 10K and P600 for 16K with free singlets plus a 20% discount on all Timex products worth P3,000 and above.
The registration has already started until the August 9 deadline at Timex Shop Abreeza Mall from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Timex Shop at SM City Davao from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Timex Run Davao is organized by Runrio Inc. led by running coach Rio dela Cruz with the support of Powerade, Viva Mineral Water, Black Beauty, United Neon, Grand Regal Hotel Davao and Vantage Sports Promotion.
"We're expecting 3,000 to 5,000 runners," said Sai.
Team Pangilinan, also composed of siblings Ella, Donny, Hannah and Benj, are joining the race for the first time here in Davao.
"We have become a stronger family because of running together," said Anthony Pangilinan, a management trainer, motivational speaker and productivity consultant, who also has his own Teleradyo program, "Magbago Tayo" at Akson TV5.
He was one of the finishers in the 2009 and 2010 Ironman Philippines 70.3 held in Camarines Sur and was the official Timex Phils. delegate to the New York Marathon 2011.
Maricel, on the other hand, is also a seasoned athlete like his husband and will be sent by Timex to run in the prestigious New York City Marathon in November 2012.
She was the third placer in the 2009 Anvaya Invitational Triathlon and fourth placer in the Camsur 70.3 Ironman in the relay category. This year, she finished first both in the Ateneo Aquathon and Bert Lozada Cup Invitational Swim Meet.
All their childen, except their youngest daughter Solana, 11 months old, have also won different awards in the the field of multisport. They are actively competing in different races in Alabang, Subic and Manila.
Ella, 15, was the champion in the 2010 Anvaya Invitational Triathlon and 2011 Gabriel Symphony Buddy Run, while 12-year old sister Hannah is also a triathlete and gymnast and a consistent runner-up finisher in various races.
Donny, 14, won in this year's relay division in the Alaska Ironkids Run held in Makati and was second placer in the ITU Subic International Duathlon. Benj, 10, is the most be-medalled since 2010. He recently ruled the Alaska Ironkids Aquathlon Palms and was the second placer in this year's Alaska Ironkids Run Mall of Asia.
