Jopson, one of the five members of the Vaseline Men XTERRA Philippine Team, posted a time of three hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds in what is considered as one of the most difficult course in the world.
The course features 1.5-kilometer rough water swim, a 30.4-kilometer mountain bike track, and a 9.5-kilometer roller-coaster-ride-like trail run through fields and forests, according to a press statement released by the XTERRA Philippine Team.
Jopson actually finished 32nd in the 35-39 age group and 289th overall.
Also participating as members of the XTERRA Philippine Team were celebrity triathletes Matteo Guidicelli and Drew Arellano, and the two winners of the Vaseline Men XTERRA Tri-outs local competition - corporate training manager Redg Plopinio and Second Wind Running Store owner Hector Yuzon.
Guidicelli and Arellano finished in the top tier of their respective age groups. Finishing the entire race with a time of 4:02:44, Guidicelli secured a remarkable 16th place in the 20-24 age group. Meanwhile, Arellano earned the 43rd spot in the 30-34 age group after completing the race with exactly the same time.
Also making it big in the tough and prestigious competition was Plopinio who finished the race in 4:39:06 and ranked 47th in the 30-34 age group. He was immediately followed by Yuzon who placed 48th in the same age group after ending the race with a time of 4:46:21.
Emerging as the overall winner of the global competition was Spain’s Javier Gomez Noya, who finished the entire race with a time of 2:26:50. Not only did he place 1st in the pro division and beat other professional triathletes, he also had the fastest swim and bike times of the day.
Noya has several gold, silver and bronze medals from various continental and world triathlon championships. He also placed 2nd at the 2012 London Olympic Games and 4th at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Placing as 2nd in the XTERRA world championship was USA’s Josiah Middaugh, who ended the race in 2:27:40. Middaugh, who was the champion of XTERRA USA, had the best bike time of the day. Meanwhile, just 16 seconds behind Middaugh and coming in 3rd place was South Africa’s Conrad Stoltz, who finished with a time of 2:30:03.
Dubbed as the world’s premier and biggest off-road triathlon series, XTERRA Off-road Triathlon is also one of the most difficult in the world. Another proof of the competition’s magnitude is its number of participants which amounted to as many as 740 triathletes. These participants came from over 34 different countries and are elite, professional and deemed as the world’s best of the best triathletes.
In the Philippines, Vaseline Men, the fastest growing men’s skin care brand, held the Vaseline Men XTERRA Tri-outs Camp to form a five-man team that will represent the country in the XTERRA Global Championship in Maui.
