Veterans rule Columbia Trail Masters Davao

DAVAO CITY – The duo of biker Dexter Nonato and triathlete April John Maniyog of Davao Outdoor Tours & Adventure (DOTA) ruled the duathlon event while marathoners Lloyd Malinao and Joy Mawalic shared top honors in the trail run of the Columbia Trail Masters Davao held Saturday at the Paradise Island Park and Beach Resort in Samal, Lito delos Reyes of SCOOP Davao reported in the association's Facebook page.

Nonato, 29, team captain of the Inday Sara Duterte Cycling team, and 20-year old Maniyog used their advantage in biking as they broke away from the lead pack at the start of the downhill ride of the 30-kilometer road bike.

“After the first 9.8 kilometer loop, we already had gained the lead,” said Nonato, who recently saw action in the Ronda Pilipinas qualifying race held in Tarlac.

Race director Erwin “Pastour” Emata said the dynamic duo’s time was really very fast as they crossed the finish line after a 10-K footrace with a time of one hour and 24 minutes.

Nonato and Maniyog earned a cash prize of P10,000 with medals and P4,000 worth of Columbia gift checks awarded by Primer Group Mindanao marketing and communications officer Mae Sanchez and Paradise Island assistant resort manager Jun Diamante.

Second place was the tandem of triathlete Christopher “Tope” Eyao, 38, and Samal-native Ronald Dagaang, 28, of Team Titans, who clocked 1:26:47 to pocket P7,000 with medals and gift certificates.
The duo from Biker Boy of Dioneses Dawa, 34, and Mark Icalina, 30, settled for third place with a time of 1:32:38 to bring home P5,000 cash with medals and gift certificates.

Malinao and Mawalic, on the other hand, dominated the men’s and women’s open, respectively in the 10K Trail Run.

Malinao, 26, of the People’s Park Runners Club clocked 44 minutes and 3 seconds to win his second trail run title. Malinao, who previously topped the Sun City 10K trail run, pocketed P3,000 with a medal and gift certificate.

He was followed by 50-year old Feliato Gitacay, a pastor, who beat his younger rivals with a time of 44:37.

Gitacay, who ruled the 10K Davao Milo Marathon in 1985, earned P2,000 with a medal and gift certificates. Toril’s Rexie Joy Rivero, 26, placed third at 49:48 while lone foreign entry Paul Hicks of Bugsay Dabaw finished fourth at 59:47.

In the distaff side, the 42-year old Mawalic of Team Titans had a time of 56:32 to win her second trail run title. She also won the Columbia trail run held in Davao City early this year.

“She (Mawalic) was really fast,” said Hicks, who arrived two weeks ago with his wife Vicel to give birth to their second child in Davao.

Nurse Niel Ross Neri, 26, of the Davao Regional Hospital in Tagum took second place at 1:12:56 followed in third by Ingrid Taojo, 23, of Hexat Mining at 1:14:17.

A total of 149 runners and 40 duathlon participants saw action in the event.

The awarding ceremony was stopped briefly with the unexpected marriage proposal of Dr. Kirk Patrick Oliverio, 30, a surgeon of the Southern Philippines Medical Center, to his 29-year old girlfriend Aima Potenciano, who accepted it infront of the huge crowd.

“Akala ko nanalo ako ng raffle prize. Nabigla na lang ako ng lumapit siya (Kirk) na my hawak na singsing sa harap ko,” Potenciano, a key accounts manager.
Exciting raffle prizes were also given away including a Columbia back pack won by former slamdunk champion Allen Digma.

The Samal race was the fifth leg of the nationwide trail runs sponsored by Columbia.
“We might next hold in Manila and also in Cagayan de Oro next year,” said Columbia marketing communications officer Soleil Sanchez.
