Kenyan, Cebuana rule 3rd NatGeo Earth Day Run 2012

Another Kenyan ruled the men’s 21K race while Cebu’s running champion Miscelle Gilbuena topped the women's category of the  3rd NatGeo Earth Day Run held recently at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

According to a Philippine Daily Inquirer report, James Mibei won in one hour, 13 minutes and 5 seconds, beating compatriot Elijah Kipruto by 32 seconds.  Carlito Fantilaga placed third in 1:22.52.

Gilbuena prevailed with a time of 1:37.09. British expat Carly Relf, who recently picked up triathlon, was second in 1:51.29 while Victorina Calma followed in 1:55.29.

Kenyans likewise placed 1-2 in the 10K men’s category—Samson Tuwei (33:46.8) and David Kipsang (34:12.8). Coming in third was Roel Ano (36:44.8).

The female top three were Genevieve Delapena (50:27.8), Lucille Ang (53:22.8) and Natalie Chun (57:00.8).

Meantime, Jude Turcuato, Fox International Channels vice president and territory head said that almost 8,000 weekend and recreational runners joined the 3K and 5K events in the race meant to raise awareness about caring for the environment.

The 3K field featured celebrities including Miss Philippines-Earth 2011 beauty pageant winners Miss Philippines Earth Athena Imperial, Miss Philippines Air Jonavi Quiray, Miss Philippines Water Muriel Orais, Miss Philippines Fire Michelle Gavagan and Miss Philippines Ecotourism Denisse Toribio.

In the 10K and 21K distances there were more than 3,000 professional and competitive runners.

“I am pleased with the huge turnout of runners especially in the 3K and 5K races because it shows there are still a lot more people who are willing to make a difference, to go green and make a stand for the environment,” said Turcuato.

“The Earth Day Run is our way of resonating our call to protect and conserve the environment." Turcuato added.
